Private CLARINET lessons at your home, or at Richard’s studio in Forest Knolls.
Lessons available in Marin generally Monday through Saturday.
An excellent clarinetist and an excellent teacher. Richard considers himself more a teacher than a professional player. He instructs all ages and all levels! He specializes and teaches only one instrument. Thus, “a master of one, rather than a Jack of all…”
Richard often begins with the standard recognized classroom band method book, and a couple of proven clarinet method books, and finally performance pieces. He consistently includes rudimentary and fundamental exercises. He also provides assistance to his students in preparing particularly challenging pieces for their school music programs.
Enjoyable; experienced teacher (45+ years); professional!
References available.
Richard strongly encourages (but doesn’t insist upon) a sincere attempt by his students to commit to practicing lesson materials regularly “x” minutes on non-lesson days. (i.e. ~ ½ hour/day for introductory  level pupils.)
Learn more music, and enjoy becoming a better performer, and a better listener.
Orchestra, concert band, chamber, and even a little jazz. Enjoyable,…  again.
Richard is semi-retired, and is also a day-time 1:1 home instructor for the public schools.
Past achievements include 4 Illinois state solo HS superior awards. 4 ½ years under Mark Heinsley in the top concert band at the University of Illinois (“band country”). 1st chair and a founding conductor at UC Irvine. 1st chair at UCLA in the top band and student orchestra. 12 years principal clarinetist in a southern California symphony. He studied 4 ½ years with internationally renowned clarinetist, Mitchell Lurie. He also has played under; Revelli, Fennell, both Mehtas, Reiner, Sawhill, and many others. He played with the San Jose Symphonic Wind band for 29 years, and the Ohlone Wind Orchestra (band) for 5 years much of the time on 1st chair each. He now has his own trio (clarinet, cello, and piano), and performs accompanied solo works.
Richard is also experienced as a professional audio recording engineer and record producer. He has also participated in many band tours – international and domestic.
